Join the RAS for one of the finest views you will ever see—right at the heart of Seoul! Seoul has been the capital city of Korea for more than 600 years and is unique in being surrounded by a wall that links four mountains (Inwangsan-Namsan-Naksan and Bugaksan), the wall being pierced originally by four great gates and four small gates. This tour will explore Bugaksan—the Northern mountain, with Sukjeoungmun gate and of course, the view. This tour is still special as this part of Seoul was closed to the public for 40 years and only re-opened in 2007.
600 years ago, Bugaksan was the starting point of the masterplan for constructing a fortress that would protect the new capital. Some segments of the original 18.2 km-long walls have been demolished, however restoration is in hand in a number of places in hope of having Seoul Fortress Wall registered to the UNESCO cultural heritage. Today’s hike is along the wall running behind Gyeongbok palace and the Blue House. Unfortunately, its proximity to the rulers of Seoul meant that it was a subject of attacks, from the Japanese invasion (Imjin War, 1592) to January 1968 when a squad of North Korean infiltrators unsuccessfully tried to attack the Blue House.
Our trail will start near Sukjeongmun (the North Gate) and trek to the peak of Bugak mountain; there we will enjoy the panoramic view over the capital, then we will walk down to Changuimun. We meet at 9:00 a.m at Anguk station (subway station orange line #3) exit number 2. From there we take a local bus for a 10 minutes’ ride to the rear gate of Sungkyunkwan University. We will walk for 20 minutes to Malbaui Office, where we receive permission to enter. The whole journey takes 2 hours, including 4-5 5-minute stops at scenic spots. Foreigners need to bring a PASSPORT and Koreans a Korean ID CARD to be issued a permit for the hike.
The fee is W 20,000 for members, 24,000 W for non-members. Photography is not permitted along much of the trail. You MUST wear stout, comfortable walking shoes, this is at times a strenuous hike on rough paths.

Dear RASKB,
I was joining this hike last Sunday and I really would like to thank to the guide, Ms. Cha.
She is just a perfect guide giving such pleasant experience amonst strangers.
Of course her knowledge about the fortress was also great and

One thing I would like to suggest, you may consider to include BEASASIL GYEGOK(http://www.jongno.go.kr/Tour.do?menuId=01110601&tour=03&menuNo=2240&incP...) in the route or develop as a new course(http://navercast.naver.com/contents.nhn?contents_id=3059.

Hope to join another event led by Ms. Cha next time again.
