Adventures in Subtitling:

The Challenges and Complexities of Making English Subtitles

for KoreanFilms

Translation is a complicated endeavor in any medium, but film subtitles provide their own particular intricacies and challenges. In this lecture, film critic and translator Darcy Paquet will provide an overview of the subtitling process and the working system that has developed in the Korean film industry over the past two decades, while also considering some of the linguistic and cultural issues that arise when translating Korean dialogue into English text. Examples from Parasite (2019), The Handmaiden (2016) and other films will be presented to illustrate the ways that meaning and emotional nuance can shift when moving across languages.

Darcy Paquet is the founder of and the author of New Korean Cinema: Breaking the Waves (2010). A former correspondent for Screen International and Variety, he currently teaches at the Busan Asian Film School. In 2013 he co-launched the Wildflower Film Awards Korea, which focuses on Korean independent films, and he has also done subtitle translation for numerous works including Parasite, The Handmaiden, and On the Beach at Night Alone. Darcy has been living in Seoul since 1997.
