The Amazing Story of
Korea's Industrial Development

The Republic of Korea's industrial development began when President Park Chung-Hee decided to establish Korea Institute of Science and Technology (KIST). This was the beginning of the most successful "Counter Brain Drain" of the Korean engineers from abroad, which today is recognized by many countries of the world. This was followed by the successful founding of the Daeduk Science Town.

Principal Investigators also took part in the execution of the Heavy and Chemical Development Plan spearheaded by the Blue House which included Ulsan Petrochemical Complex and Pohang Steel Mill. Many key engineers from KIST also became the charter members of the Agency for Defense Development (ADD) which successfully launched a ground-to-ground missile.

The development of key Information and Communication Technology at the Electronic and Telecommunication Research Institute (ETRI) was also led by KIST members who were engaged in the development of electronic telephone exchange system. Quite a few engineers were scouted by the large conglomerates, like Samsung and LG, to establish R&D organizations, which have become larger than the Government-run R&D Laboratories today by far.

Dr. Youngok "Andy" Ahn was called back to Korea by Pres. Park while he was working at DuPont Labs in the US to help kickstart the technology miracle that helped raise Korea out of poverty.  Andy, as he prefers to be called, helped found the Korea Instiute of Science & Technology (KIST), the forerunner of KAIST, and latter served as the Samsung Group's first Chief Technical Officer.  At our urging, he will include his personal story in this narrative, which is equally fascinating to the results of the efforts by him and his colleagues.

Dr. Ahn Youngok, a chemical engineer, was recruited by Pres. Park Chung-Hee when he was a researcher at DuPont Laboratories in the United States to return to Korea to help his country.  The result has become known as the "Miracle on the Han."  Dr. Ahn will give a historical narrative from a personal perspective, including his role as the Samsung Group's first Chief Technology Officer.  He will share some interesting anecdotes, including the successful export of a nuclear power plant to UAE, etc.
