Just a couple of years ago, Gyeongnidan-gil was little more than a quiet, working class residential neighborhood. Then the craft beer pubs and trendy eateries started moving in, and the neighborhood became a byword for hip (and, less charitably, for gentrification). So hip it became, in fact, that it lent its name to up-and-coming neighborhoods elsewhere such as Mangwon-dong's Mangnidan-gil, Songpa-gu's Songnidan-gil, Gyeongju's Hwangnidan-gil and Busan's Haeridan-gil. More recently, much of Gyeongnidan's dynamism has moved to adjacent Haebangchon, a hillside neighborhood that formed in the years following liberation from colonial rule and the Korean War. This multicultural area is witnessing a boom in popularity thanks to its plethora of cool restaurants, cafes and bars. One highlight is Shinheung Market, an old traditional market that has been reborn as a hip space of dining and culture.

We'll also explore the adjacent Huam-dong area, another up-and-coming district with plenty of history.
