Join the RAS as we take an emotional journey to the House of Sharing, the home of living comfort women who were forced to become sex-slaves during World War II.

The House of Sharing was first built in Mapo-Gu, Seoul, in October of 1992, through funds raised by Buddhist organizations and various socio-civic groups. In 1995, the house, after being moved to several different locations within Seoul, was moved to its present location in Twoichon-myon, Gwangju-si, Gyeonggi-do. In the spring of 2016 eight former comfort women—the more preferred term being “grandmothers”—resided in the house. These women are assisted by five full-time staff members, but as their health is compromised by the brutalities of their stolen youth and aging processes in general, we may or may not be able to meet and interact with one of two of the women who are still capable of meeting visitors.

The House of Sharing is a compound containing 2 dormitories, an office building, a temple and training education office, a historical museum as well as stupas of women from the House of Sharing who died waiting for an apology. Volunteers run guided tour programs at the museum—an information archive of the dark history—and inform visitors about the history of women used as sex slaves by the Japanese during WWII.

Since apologies are not forthcoming, the two greater purposes of the House of Sharing is to provide a home for the “grandmothers” and to be a center of education for the sharing of an accurate history on the brutalities which the Japanese inflicted on women in WWII.

The “grandmothers” are a rare piece of living history, and visits are often emotional. And yet, meeting these remarkable women one can not but get a sense of hope at the resilience of the human spirit.
