Highlights and Treasures

from the National Museum of Korea's Permanent Collection

Meeting Point:  At Exit 2 of Ichon (National Museum of Korea) Station (Subway Line 4)

Originally founded in 1908 as the Korean Imperial Museum, The National Museum of Korea has been serving its role as the definite place to visit for anyone to study Korea's rich historical and cultural heritage throughout its history. Since its relocating to the current location in Yongsan in 2005, however, the sheer size of the museum - with more than 15,000 permanent display items and the massive size of the main building which is the sixth largest in the world - and the generally lacking English-language curation / tour guides for the museum made it quite difficult for many expats in Korea to appreciate the museum's true potential. This extensive tour of the highlights of the National Museum of Korea will serve as a rare opportunity to learn not only the history of Korea throughout the ages but also to appreciate the beauty and the aesthetics of many top quality pieces of Korean pre-modern (pre-1900) art. The tour will focus on the highlights of the first floor historical exhibits first, and then would move towards the second and third floors of the museum, focusing on the greatest treasures and works of Korean fine arts. Time permitting, the tour will also have a stroll to the Outdoor exhibits, where a large collection of Buddhist Stupas, Pagodas, and even a gigantic bronze bell are now preserved.

We will meet at Exit 2 of the Ichon (National Museum of Korea) Station (Subway Line 4) at 12:30 PM and the tour will last for about 3 hours and a half. The Museum is free of charge (except for the special exhibits, of which we are not going to see). There are currently no plans for the after-hours meals or refreshments, but for those who wants to join Jihoon for dinner after the tour can choose to do so freely.

Jihoon Suk received his BA and MA on Korean history from Yonsei University and currently doing his Ph.D. program on Korean Studies at the Asian Languages and Cultures (ALC) Department at the University of Michigan-Ann Arbor. Besides his specialty on the history of creation of Korean national culture through the means of modern non-textual, audiovisual media, he is also an avid enthusiast of Korean historical and cultural heritage and eager to share his knowledge on them through anyone who are interested in these topics.
