Korean Avalokitesvara Painting

Korea has experienced great cultural achievements in the field of painting. This field has developed continuously in the course of history. Korean Buddhist painting has left the unique beautiful paintings which are recognized worldwide, developing its own style. The style of Avalokitesvara painting developed in East Asia has been spread over an entire cultural area, but regional characteristics have developed which are so obvious that it is possible to speak of an especially Korean style. Korean Avalokitesvara paintings distinguish themselves clearly from those in China and Japan. The exceptional creativity and an exceptional aesthetic feeling turn out often to be characteristic of Korean Avalokitesvara painting. The difference to the art of neighbour countries resides above all in the way how the Korean artists have interpreted and applied the styles which they have encountered. Dr. Noh's intention is to highlight the uniqueness of Korean Avalokitesvara painting compared to East Asian countries.

Hee-Jik Noh is lecturer from Hankuk University of Foreign Studies in Seoul. He studied German literature and language. He received his Ph. D from the University of Tuebingen in Germany. He has written numerous articles on aesthetics, film, rhetoric. He has been studying Korean culture in East Asian context for many years. In German he has published a book on Korean art entitled 'Auf der Suche nach der schoenen koreanischen Kunst'. He has been writing a book on Zen-Buddhism in East Asia in English.
