This RASKB walk through downtown looks closer at the awkward handshake between modern Seoul and the ancient capital of Joseon. Seoul's central Jongno-gu has a history stretching back over 600 years, which has led to the formation of many compressed layers of history under the ground you walk upon. This walk takes us through what's left of the historic working-class alley of Pimatgol, where questions of preservation vs redevelopment will be discussed along the way.

Much of the area was erased during Korea's rapid modernisation, which is itself now being erased. And now the country is finally beginning to uncover its ancient heritage in methods of varying effectiveness. A common feature of new buildings constructed along Jongno these days is a public space exhibit of archaeological ruins, placed out in the open under a glass cover so we can look down into the distant past. These new preservation methods rather are about the new structures, signaling a state of developmental completion and implying the end of history.

Jon Dunbar is an urban explorer who has been documenting urban renewal in Seoul and around Korea since 2005, visiting construction cranes and roofs, underground rivers and train tunnels, and everything in between. He curates a database of 564 abandoned areas around Korea, which includes anything from large-scale abandoned neighbourhoods down to abandoned amusement parks and other phenomena of the changing urban landscape. He is currently an editor at The Korea Times.
