RAS Explores Korean Modern Art

First opened as the Yiwangga Art Museum (Yi Family Royal Museum) in 1938, the Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art (MMCA) Deoksugung Branch celebrates its 80th year this year. To celebrate this historic occasion, as well as to commemorate the 20th anniversary of MMCA Deoksugung’s 1998 reorganization, the MMCA Deoksugung currently hosts a special exhibition called "Birth of the Modern Art Museum", from May to October of this year.

The exhibition is divided into two different criteria. The first part of the exhibit focuses on the history of the museum building itself, which is currently the oldest extant purposedly-built museum building in the country. Designed by Nakamura Yoshihei (1880-1963), the leading Japanese architect who designed more than 60 major Korean and Japanese public buildings, the museum building is a combination of classicist tradition, and its pursuit of order and balance, with the new style represented by the 1930’s "new monumental" architecture. The exhibition’s framework is to draw attention to the building’s aesthetic and historic value, displayed alongside the masterworks of modern Korean art within, which were produced around the time of its construction.

The second part of the exhibit is a “textbook” exhibition, enlisting around 100 masterpieces by over 70 major modern Korean artists, including An Chungsik, Ko Heedong, Oh Jiho, Kim Whanki, Park Sugeun, and Lee Jungseob. This provides a rare chance to see these masterpieces all at once, some of which have been rarely exhibited before. The exhibition also focuses on the MMCA collection’s history and the story behind these works’ inclusion in the MMCA collection, providing a chance to reexamine the role and direction of MMCA as a whole.

We will meet in front of Daehanmun, the main gate of Deoksugung, at 6:45 pm (Closest to Exit 1 of City Hall Station, Subway Line 1 and 2). The entrance fee for the museum is 3,000 won. No drink and food is allowed within the museum or the Deoksugung palace grounds, but anyone is welcome to join Jihoon at dinner BEFORE the tour.
