Lying to the East of Seoul, Sobaek-san ("Small White Mountain") is one of Korea's most famous mountains. Sobaek-san National Park is known for its wild flowers, particularly Edelweiss, one of the park's major tourist attractions. Despite the dramatic mountain scenery and the distinctive natural features found here, there are few trails, it is still a relatively unspoiled retreat into nature.

We will first hike half an hour to reach Huibang-sa, a temple established during the Silla Dynasty, and the most famous temple in this park. Below Huibang-sa is a beautiful 18-meter high waterfall.

After a brief visit to Huibang-sa we will re-board the bus and head to the next temple, Guin-sa. We will take an approximately 20 minutes hike from the parking lot in order to get to the temple. Guin-sa temple is the headquarters of the Cheontae school of Korean Buddhism and is located in a small valley on the north slope of Sobaek-san. The buildings making up this temple complex are set so close together that they are nearly stacked one on top of another up the steep and narrow valley. The most unusual feature of Guin-sa is its elaborate five story main hall. The only building of this type in Korea, the main worship hall on the upper floor features a beautiful gilt Buddha flanked by two bodhisattvas. This is considered by many to be one of the most beautiful temples in Korea.

After visiting Guin-sa, we will be heading back to Seoul by bus.

Cost of the tour is W58,000 for members, and for non-members W70,000. We will leave from the Korean Yongsan Post Office at 8:00 a.m. near Sinyongsan Station #429 exit #1, (Subway blue line) and return to Seoul is slated for 8:30 p.m. The bus ride down will take about 3 hours. You can bring a sack lunch or buy something to eat at our rest stops.

Reservation: please register for this excursion before or on Wednesday June 26.
