The Gopanhwa museum, or rather the Museum and Research Institute of Ancient Asian Woodblock Prints, is located at Myeongjusa temple on the slopes of Chiaksan, south of Wonju. The museum is a private collection and houses more than 4,000 ancient woodblocks and woodblock prints created in Korea, China, Japan, Tibet and Mongolia. Monk Han Sun-hak, the collector and director of his private collection, will be our host and teacher.

The woodblock print experience is embedded in a 24-hour templestay. Our templestay experience begins at 1:00 p.m. with a tour of the museum where we will examine woodblock carvings and prints up close. Following our introduction to ancient woodblocks, we will then have three experiences in how people in former times used them. First we will learn about inking woodblocks for printing purposes and then experience the art of printing our own t-shirt with an engraved woodblock—this will be our templestay “uniform” for the remainder of our visit. Then we will design and learn the techniques for carving our own small woodblock. The following morning after our morning meditation and reflective walk in nature with the monk, we will use a woodblock for embossing paper, and in our case the cover of a keepsake memory folder.

During our visit we will also experience traditional Buddhist customs, learn theories of meditation, as well as participate in some daily routines characteristic of templestay. Our meals will reflect Buddhist temple food (Saturday dinner and Sunday breakfast). We will sleep on thick floor mats in a newly built “Finnish-style” dormitory with about 4 persons per spacious room. Each room has its own bathroom with toilet, sink and shower—participants need only bring their own towel and personal toiletries.

At 11 a.m. our templestay finishes, and after bidding the monk farewell we will walk 1 kilometer to a local herb restaurant for mountain bibimbap. From there we will be bussed to the local Shillim train station to catch our return train to Cheongryangni station.

Our train schedule is: Saturday take the 9:34 a.m train from Cheongryangni train station and arrive at Shillim station at 11:15. Sunday take the 1:13 p.m train from Shillim station and return to Cheongryangni station at 2:50 p.m.

We will meet at 9:00 a.m. Please be on time!

The cost includes templestay with its three inclusive meals (Saturday lunch & dinner and Sunday breakfast), train tickets and Sunday lunch at the herb restaurant.

Bring your personal clothing and overnight essentials, including a TOWEL. Bedding is provided. Pack lightly as we may walk to the restaurant on Sunday and after lunch we will depart by the shuttle the museum provides.
