The Gopanhwa Bakmulgwan, aka The Museum of Ancient Asian Woodblock Prints is nestled at the base of Chiaksan, Gangwon Province. This unique museum treasure is a private collection of 4,300 woodblocks and woodblock prints from Korea, China, Tibet, Mongolia and Japan and which range from “somewhat old” to 800 years very old.

Director, curator and museum owner Han Sunhak, PhD in Museum Education, is a monk of the Taegyo Order and offers a templestay and woodblock experience program. His temple is a unique octagonal temple which he designed based on universe principals and which houses a 1.5 meter tall Buddha that he himself sculpted in three weeks from a massive 300-year-old aged tree. The secluded mountain refuge with delicious Buddhist cuisine and accommodation in new Finnish-style cabins has a spectacular view of the descending valley and the opposing mountain peak which features the profile of a man gazing to the heavens. A tranquil spot for meditation, hiking, and photography.

In this setting Director Han guides visitors through his museum, then offers three experiential programs: inking woodblocks for imprinting t-shirts, carving a personal woodblock, and learning embossing methods for traditional-style book covers. When the weekend is over, visitors will have gathered a massive amount of information on the history of woodblocks and have learned some skills concerning a few of their diverse usages.

After departing the museum, we will be stopping by the Wonju Hanji Theme Park/Museum for a wander through the museum that features a history of Korea’s traditional paper. In the 2-3 hours at the huge museum, those interested may even take part in one of the many craft experiential programs the museum has to offer.

Come join the RAS on a weekend of new experiences at the Museum of Ancient Asian Woodblock Prints and the Wonju Hanji Theme Park. Experience the ancient traditional arts of Korea!
