We will meet at the front gate of Yonsei University at 1:00 PM. The closest subway isLine 2, Sinchon Station, Exit 2 or 3. Walk about three blocks; go  under a short tunnel and cross the main road. Ask anyone on the way. Otherwise, there are several buses coming from the Anguk-dong and Subway Line 3, the most frequent being 272, and then 606, both of which stop in front of the university.

This is a walking tour including some hills, so please wear appropriate shoes and clothing. We will begin with a short walk to visit the university museum, and then to the re-creation of the Chejungwon, the first Western hospital built in Korea and the precursor to Severance Hospital. Next we will drop in the Luce Chapel lounge which is on the site of Soo Kyung Won, the tomb of royal consort Lee, Yeong-bin for a look around the remarkable exhibit of the life of Christ depicted in traditional Korean settings.

Next we will head on through this modern flowering campus to the Korean War bullet-stuck statute of Horace G. Underwood I and the surrounding, original campus. Some interesting stories will be told here. We will continue up along a sylvan path for the main purpose of this tour to a quaint wooded area. This contains a house built in the 1920’s, the renovated memorial house of Horace H Underwood II, the eldest son of Horace G Underwood I, one of the earliest missionaries to Korea, confidant of the king and founder of Yonsei University. This remarkable museum contains 100’s of photographs and memorabilia of four generations of the Underwood family, all of whom have lived in and made valuable contributions to Korea, including Horace G Underwood I who was a founding member of the RAS and Horace G Underwood III who was a president of the RAS. Our guide, Peter Underwood, a representative of the fourth generation, was the Corresponding Secretary of the RAS from 1977-1980. He is full of stories and ready to answer your questions.

From there we will walk up and down a wooded hill to the grave of student police guards killed by guerrillas just before the outbreak of the Korean War, to the back gate of Seoul Foreign School founded by Ethel Van Wagoner Underwood, another member of the Underwood family.

We will continue through the campus by the Observatory and then turn along a pleasant lane by the current Underwood family house until reaching Severance Hospital, also founded by an early missionary. The hospital has a small art museum on the first floor and a sizable food court with a wide range of restaurants and choices, for those who wish we could have dinner there. Shuttle buses to Sinchon Station are available out front. Also, regular buses going east or west are available at the bottom of the hill.
