List of RAS Korea Meetings (1958-2000)

 

1958- May 1959 Meetings

Meetings were resumed in September after the summer recess, the series beginning with the paper on “The American Role in Opening Korea to the West, 1850~1895,” by Mr. Donald S. MacDonald, which appears in this volume. In the absence of the author, who had already returned to the United States, his paper was read for him. This meeting was held in the Seoul Chamber of Commerce building.

In October Mr. Wever Gim spoke on “Some Aspects of the Prejudice Against Cholla People.” The November meeting heard a talk by Mrs. George Munson on Korean shells, during which she displayed examples from her collection. 

In December Professor Rho Joon-hi, of Songgyun-gwan University, spoke on Korean trees; after this talk Mr. Lee Yong-no, of the College of Pharmacy, Ewha Womens’ University, showed his collections of slides of Korean trees and flora.

The first meeting of 1959 was on 7th January, at Korea House, and on this occasion Dr. Lee Young-ha, of Seoul National University, spoke on “The State of Korean Literature at the Present Time.”

In February Mr. Gregory Henderson presented his paper, printed in this volume, on “The History of the Chŏng Dong Area and the American Embassy Compound.” The interest of this paper was greatly enhanced by being read in the American Embassy residence itself, and the meeting attracted a record attendance of over two hundred.

The March meeting again reverted to Korea House, and heard two talks. First, Dr. and Mrs. Esson M. Gale spoke on “The early foreign community in Seoul, and their residences.” This was illustrated by original photograph projections. Mr. William E. Henthorn then read a paper on “The Rebellion of the Sam Pyŏl Cho,” an incident of the Koryo period at the time of the Mongol invasion.

In April, Mr. Wilbur D. Bacon, author of the paper on the Royal Tombs of the Yi Dynasty published in Volume XXXIII of the Transactions, read a paper on “Fortresses of Kyonggi Do.” This was illustrated by coloured slides.

The May meeting heard Mrs. Ellen Conant speak on “Modern Oriental Painting.” Her talk also was illustrated by excellent slides.

1960 Meetings

  • February 3:  Professor George Rainer, of Seoul National University: “The Chinese Book of Songs”
  • March 2:  Mr Chester Fennell, of Civilian Personnel, 8th Army: “Korean Birds”
  • April 6:  Associate Professor Kim Chin-man, Chairman of the English Depertment of the Songgyun-gwan University: “History of the Songgyungwan”
  • May 4:  Dr Kim Che-won,Director of the National Museum: “Excavation on the Site of Kamunsa.” (感恩寺) This lecture was illustrated with coloured slides,
  • June 8:   Mr Alan C. Hey man, an authority on Korean folk music, assisted by Professor Chi Yong-hi, Prof essor of the Korean Folk Music Arts School: “An Introduction to Korean Folk Music.” The lecture was followed by an excellent programme.
  • July 13:   Dr John King Fairbanks Henry Lee Higginson Professor of History, Harvard: “An Historian Looks at Modern China.” A reception and dinner for Dr Fairbank preceded the lecture.
  • August 3:  Dr Edward Wagner, of the Harvard-Yenching Institute: “The Political Structure of the Early Yi Dynasty”
  • September 7: Dr David Chung, member of the Faculty of Kon-guk University: “The Three Religions Are One Principle”
  • October 6: Dr Edwin Reischauer, Director of the Harvard Yenching Institute: “Korean History as Part of World History.” A reception and dinner preceded the lecture.
  • November 2nd   Mr Han Kap-su, one of the Directors of the Han’gul Society: “The History of Han’gul and its Movement”
  • December 7th   The Revd Edward Poitras, of the Methodist Mission: “Japanese Agricultural Policy in Korea During the Period of Annexation.”

1961 Meetings

  • January 18:  Dr Fritz Vos, of the University of Leyden: “Some Aspects of the Yi (Dynasty) Novel.”
  • February 8:  The Reverend Richard Rutt, of the Anglican Mission: “Kim Sakkat, the Itinerant Poet.”
  • March 8:  Mr. Peter Smart, of the British Embassy, read a paper prepared by Miss Jean Gates entitled “Tangun.”
  • April 12: Dr. Kim Chong-hak, of Korea University: “The Excavation of a Shell Mound near Ungch’on (Kyong-sang Namdo,) illustrated with slides. After the lecture two short movies were shown, “Korean Homes,”and the OPI film of the April 1960 demonstrations.
  • May 3:  Dr. Samuel Martin, Associate Professor of Far Eastern Linguistics at Yale University: “The Korean Language as I See It.” A reception and dinner preceded the lecture.
  • June 28: Dr. Kim Hon-gyu, Professor of Zoology at Ehwa Women’s University: “Korean Butterflies,” illustrated with slides. After this lecture the charming water color paintings of Korean costumes by Mrs. Florence Hedelston Crane were displayed.
  • July 27:  Dr. Yu Hyong-jin, Dean of the Liberal Arts and Sciences College of Sungmyong Women’s University: “Women’s Education in the Later Yi Period.”
  • August 9:  Dr. Cho Ka-gyong, Professor of Philosophy of the Liberal Arts and Sciences College, Seoul National University: “Modern Philosophical Trends in Korea.”
  • September 13:  Mr. Carl Miller, of the Research Department, Bank of Korea: “Korean Given Names.” A reception and dinner preceded this lecture honoring Mr. Pak T’ae-yong, Secretary of the Society, on the publication of his “A Korean Decameron.”
  • October 4:  Mrs. Inez Kong Pai delivered a lecture on Si jo. Her talk included her own translations of many of these Korean classical poems.
  • November 1:  The Reverend O Mun-hwan read the diary of the Reverend Calvin Wilson Mateer written on board the American ship “Shenandoah” at the time of an expedition to Korea in 1868, and compared this account with Korean records of the same incident.
  • December 6:  The Reverend Richard Rutt read a paper prepared by Professor Kim Tong-uk, of Chungang University, entitled “Personal Adornments of the Yi Dynasty.” This was also the annual meeting at which the election of officers for the coming year took place and the General Report of the Council for the year 1961 was read.

For the January, February, March and October regular meetings, the National Medical Center very kindly allowed us to use its auditorium. All of the other regular meetings were held in the charming and authentic atmosphere of Korea House. The Society is indebted to the management and the staff of Korea House for the many services courteously afforded the Society. The Diplomat Club has continued its fine service in providing refreshments at the regular meetings.

Besides the twelve regular meetings in 1961, there were the following special meetings:

  • January 11: Miss Elizabeth Lyons, a specialist on Far Eastern Art, addressed the society on the art of Thailand. 
  • February 1: The members and guests of the Society heard Mrs. Kurt Mattusch speak on “The City of the Yi.” This talk was preceded by an informal reception and dinner to give everyone an opportunity to say goodbye to Mr. and Mrs. Mattusch.
  • October 12: Dr. Vadim Elisseeff, General Director of City of Paris Museum, lectured on Buddhist art discoveries in the caves at Tunghua in Chinese Turkestan, of which he showed splendid color slides. A reception followed the lecture,
  • October 13:  Immediately following dinner in the Dynasty room of the Bando Hotel (the Twelfth Restaurant Tour), Mrs. Agnes Davis Kim, author of the book “I Married a Korean,” recounted her experiences in Korea in the 1930’s. Before the dinner, Mrs Kim was honored at a reception in the lounge of the Bando Hotel.
  • November 3:  The members of the Society had the opportunity of hearing Dr. Frank W. Schofield tell some of his experiences and observations in Korea at the time of the Independence Movement in 1919. This talk was preceded by a dinner (the Thirteenth Restaurant Tour) at the Choson Hotel.
  • November 22:  Dr. Belle Boone Beard, a Fulbright professor and gerontologist, spoke on “Longevity and Problems it Creates in Korea” following dinner at Arirang House (the Fourteenth Restaurant Tour). A reseption before the dinner afforded an opportunity to meet Dr. Beard.

1962 Meetings

  • January 17:  Mr Gregory Henderson, of the American Embassy, spoke on “The Pottery of the Early Yi Dynasty (Part I)” at Korea House.
  • February 21: Mr Gregory Henderson, of the American Embassy, spoke on “The Pottery of the Early Yi Dynasty (Part II)” at Korea House. These two very scholarly and interestng lectures were illustrated by excellent slides and examples from Mr Henderson’s collection. They have been printed as an article in Volume XXXIX of the Transactions.
  • March 14: Dr Kim Che-won, Director of the National Museum, spoke on “Silla Tombs and Recent Excavations” at the National Classical Music Institute.
  • April 4: The Rev Richard Rutt spoke on “Plum Blossoms in Temple Gardens: Problems of Koreanology”, at the National Classical Music Institute.
  • May 2: Dr Lee Sun-keun spoke on “Some Lesserknown Facts about Taewongun and his Foreign Policy”, at the National Classical Music Institute. This paper is published in Volume XXXIX of the Transactions.
  • June 13: Dr E. Beuchelt spoke on “The Popular Religion of Cheju-do”, at the National Classical Music Institute.
  • July 11: Dr Yi Ki-yong’s paper on “Wonhyo, the Great Monk of Silla” was read by Mr Peter Smart, of the British Embassy, at the National Classical Music Institute.
  • July 12: Following a reception and dinner in his honor, Dr L. Carrington Goodrich, professor of Chinese History at Columbia University, spoke on “Foreign Influences on Chinese Culture”, illustrated by slides.
  • September 12:  Dr Pak Tong-so’s paper, “A Study of the Bureaucratic Structure in Korea” was read by Mr Stephen Whitwell of the British Embassy, at the National Classical Music Institute After the paper Mr Whitwell spoke briefly on the British Occupation of Port Hamilton.
  • October 10:  Reception at the Seoul Club for Mademoiselle Madeleine David, Deputy Curator of the Musee Cernuschi, Paris, who afterward spoke on “The Identification of Ceramics”.
  • November 14: Mr Stephen Whitwell, of the British Em-bassy, spoke on “Britons in Korea” at the National Classical Music Institute.
  • December 12:  His Excellency Monsieur Roger Chambard, French Ambassador, President of the Branch, spoke on “Chinese and Korean Buddhist Pilgrims in India”, at the National Classical Music Institute.

1964 Meetings

  • January 15:  Mr. Robert A. Kinney gave “A Pictorial Journey Through Korea Prior to the Korean War.” His lecture was illustrated with slides taken during this period.
  • February 16:  Mr. Michael Pike, British Embassy, read a paper entitled “Policy on Chinese Characters in Korea.” prepared by Professor Lee Eung- baek of the College of Education, Seoul National University.
  • March 14:  Mr. John N. Somerville, Presbyterian minister, spoke on “The Hansong Sunbo: The First Chapter in the Development of Korean Press Freedom.”
  • April 15:  Professor Hahm Pyong-choon of Yonsei University spoke on “The Legal Status of Concubines and Their Descendants during the Yi Dynasty.”
  • May 27:  Mr. Yi Ku, son of the former Crown Prince of Korea, Yi Eun, spoke on “Korean Architecture.”  
  • June 10:  Dr. Paul Ryu, Dean of the Law School of Seoul National University, spoke on “Legal Education in Korea.” 
  • July 8:  Dr. Felix Moos, in Korea with the Department of Defense of the United States, spoke on “Acculturation in Korea Since 1945.” 

     <In August no regular monthly meeting was held.>

  • September 16: Professer Han Pae-ho of Chungang Univ-ersity spoke on “A Study of Political Decision Making in Korea, with Special Reference to the Case of the Kyonghyang Shinmun.”
  • October 21:  Mr. G.St. G. M. Gompertz, compiler of the Society’s Transactions, Volume 40, and noted author of several books on Korean ceramics, spoke on “Ceramic History of the Yi Period.”
  • November 18:  Dr. Felix Moos again spoke to the Society, this time on “Elder Pak’s Church in Korea.”
  • December 16:  For the final monthly meeting of 1964, Mr. Yun Tae-rim, Professor at Seoul National University, spoke on “Korean Character.” At this meeting, the election of officers for the coming year was held and the report of the treasurer was given.
