Life and Works of Seon 禪 Master Seongcheol 性徹 (1912-1993) – the most famous Korean Buddhist monk in the 20th century

Meditation Master Seongcheol (Sŏngch’ŏl) 性徹禪師 (1912-1993) undoubtedly is the most famous Buddhist monk in the history of 20th century Korea. Indeed, he enjoys the enduring reputation of having been a living Buddha. However, an in-depth study of his life and works reveals a close relationship between him and, not only the Korean dictatorship (1961-1987), but also the modern Japanese Buddhist ideologies that have supported the ascent of the Empire of the Rising Sun and the Pacific War.

Bernard SÉNÉCAL S.J. (Seo Myeongweon 徐明源) is a qualified Dharma master in the Korean Seon Way Association (禪道會) since 2007, and the chairman of the board of the Way’s End Stone Field Community, specializing in Buddhist-Christian encounter and organic farming, since 2015. Besides three books, he has published numerous essays in English, French and Korean on Korean Buddhism. In December 2015, he was granted Korean citizenship as an outstanding academic.

We hope that as many as possible of you can come to this event.
