A Passion for a Worthwhile Life – Yi Pangja’s social welfare work in Korea (1963-1989)

Summary:
This lecture considers the social welfare work of Princess Yi Pangja of Korea (Japanese: Princess Nashimoto Masako). The culmination of this, her first-hand involvement in the education of children with physical and mental disabilities in Korea and a conscious self-identification as a volunteer, took place over the last twenty five years of her life, following her final return to her adopted country in 1963. The lecture draws upon Korean, Japanese and English sources to discuss the genesis and motivation of this significant work, including her visit to the United Kingdom to 1926 and to Europe and the United States in 1973. It also examines the narrative presented in the various versions of her autobiography, known to English readers as The World is One.

Bio:
Seulkee Nam is a Ph.D. student at SOAS University of London supervised by Dr. Anders Karlsson. She is researching the Anglican Church and social welfare work in Korea in the early 20th century.

Dr. Cameron Pyke is a historian with an interest in the education of children with special educational needs and disabilities, including the methodology of Carl Orff and Gunild Keetman. In addition to an interest in Korea, he has published on Benjamin Britten’s Russian connections.
