SUMMARY:

The Penguin Book of Korean Short Stories, edited by Bruce Fulton, is the first volume of modern Korean literature among Penguin UK’s 3500-plus World Classics. The 25 authors represented in the anthology range from early masters of modern Korean fiction such as Yi Hyosŏk and Kim Yujŏng through the two writers primarily responsible for the breakthrough of Korean women fiction writers in the 1990s–Pak Wansŏ and O Chŏnghǔi (Oh Jung-hee)–to distinctive voices from the new millennium such as Kim Aeran and Han Yujoo. An added bonus is a stand-alone chapter from North Korean writer Hong Sŏkchung’s novel Hwang Chini, the first North Korean literary work to earn a major award (the 2004 Manhae Grand Prize in Literature) in South Korea.

It is hoped that one of the authors represented in the anthology may join Bruce Fulton for a short bilingual reading from that author’s story.

BIO:

Bruce Fulton is the inaugural occupant of the Young-Bin Min Chair in Korean Literature and Literary Translation, University of British Columbia, where he offers courses in Korean-to-English literary translation as well all genres and all periods of Korean literature. He is the co-translator with Ju-Chan Fulton of numerous works of modern Korean fiction; recipient of a 2018 Manhae Grand Prize in Literature; co-author with Youngmin Kwon of What Is Korean Literature? (2020); and co-recipient with Ju-Chan Fulton of the first U.S. National Endowment for the Arts Translation Fellowship for a Korean literary work and a PEN America Heim Translation Grant. His most recent book-length translations, with Ju-Chan Fulton, are the novels One Left by Kim Soom (2020) and Togani by Gong Ji-young (2023). The Fultons’ translations of Korean short fiction appear in journals such as The Massachusetts Review, Granta, Ploughshares, and The Southern Review.
