SUMMARY:

The presidency of democracy activist Kim Young-sam was a crucial turning point in modern Korean history. From early 1993 through early 1998, vast reforms were implemented in Korean government, many changes occurred in society and the status of an advanced industrialized nation was achieved, but then precipitously damaged in what we call the East Asian Financial Crisis (or “IMF Era” to Koreans).  His long political career that finally led to attaining the presidency after several attempts also had many dramatic incidents and severe controversies.  We hope to attract a group of fellow seniors who were in Korea during his time, have memories and opinions they are willing to relate, as well as younger attendees who want to listen to what we all have to say, and we will all learn perspectives together.  We will walk thru the small hall of exhibits and then gather in their small seminar room. Professor Mason will give opening remarks of the basic framework of Kim’s career and administration, including the controversies, and explain his own basic opinions; and then open it up to a spirited debate and insightful discussion.
