Lee Ungno : a case study of a Korean artist in France (1959-1989)

Lee Ungno (1904-1989) was already a well-established artist when he left Korea in 1958 and settled in France in the following year. There, he was deemed both an Asian master of traditional ink painting and a member of the French art scene. He was indeed supported by public institutions and art galleries among the most important in Paris for his contemporary sculptures and paintings, while being mostly known to the French audience as a teacher of Oriental painting.

Mael Bellec is the curator in charge of Chinese and Korean collections at the Cernuschi museum, the museum of Asian arts of the city of Paris. He curated several shows on modern and contemporary art, including “Seoul-Paris-Seoul: Korean artists in France” in 2015, “Lee Ungno: man of the crowds” in 2017, both in the Cernuschi museum, and “Lee Ungno: a stranger at home” in the Lee Ungno museum in Daejeon in 2018.

We hope that as many as possible of you can come to this event.
