From the Publisher

“Sun-i Samch’on” stands out among works from the 1970s addressing the division of Korea for its poignant portrayal of a woman whose life, haunted by post-massacre trauma for thirty years, tragically ends in suicide, vividly reflecting the contemporary aftermath of division. Following the publication, Hyun Ki-young was arrested and tortured by the National Joint Investigation Headquarters and the novel was regarded as a target for censorship. Through “Sun-i Samch’on,” which compassionately depicts the struggles of Jeju islanders, Hyun Ki-young became another victim of state violence. The work serves as both a testament to the suffering post-liberation from Japanese rule and is a poignant reflection of the harsh realities of the late 1970s.

About the Author

Hyun Ki-young was born on Jeju Island in 1941 and graduated from Seoul National University. He has served as the Managing Director of the National Literary Writers Association and as the President of the Korean Arts & Culture Foundation (2003). Hyun was also the director of the Committee for the Investigation of the April 3rd Jeju Uprising as well as the President of the Jeju Institute for the Investigation of Social Problems.
