2011-2020: The President is a Prolific Translator

When he became RAS President at the start of 2011, Brother Anthony had already been publishing translations of Korean literature for 20 years, since 1990. The result was about 25 volumes published in England or the US. Once he was RAS President, having retired from his position as Professor in Sogang University in 2007, he continued to translate and the result has been some 25 more volumes over the past 10 years, with still more yet to appear. This evening, Brother Anthony would like to share his work as a translator, mainly of Korean poetry, by evoking different poets and their lives, and reading a few special poems.

Brother Anthony was born in Cornwall (UK) in 1942, joined the Community of Taizé (France) in 1969, arrived in Korea in 1980, taught at Sogang University, and became President of RAS Korea at the start of 2011. He was awarded the Korean Order of Merit for Culture in 2008 and an MBE by Queen Elizabeth in 2015. He has received several Korean awards for his translations, including the Lotte Publishing Culture Award for Translation for 2020.
