In “Birth of a Rat” by Kim Soom, a new mother reluctantly invites four
rat-catching experts into her home. Her husband, after all, has seen a rat in the kitchen. Her infant child asleep in the bedroom, she watches as her apartment is ransacked by strangers who quickly claim the place as their own.

About the Author
Since her literary debut in 1997, Kim has published multiple short story collections and full-length novels, such as “Fighting Dog,” “Women and Their Evolving Enemies,” “To Abandon the Yellow Dog” and “One Night with Kyung-sook.” She has also been the recipient of prestigious prizes, including the Yi Sang, Daesan and Hyundae Munhak Literary Awards. Brother Anthony (An Seon-jae) has been translating short stories for “Koreana” (the quarterly published by the Korea Foundation) since 2007,  in addition to his many volumes of poetry and (more recently) popular fiction.
