The Bulldozed Future: Exploring Korea’s Urban Redevelopment

Summary:
No matter where you reside globally, urban exploration offers a unique opportunity to see your surroundings in a new light. Whether living in a place as a foreigner or native, you see things you might otherwise miss by visiting the usual tourist destinations and cultural hot spots. With a keen eye, walking through neighborhoods undergoing redevelopment reveal secrets of Korea that alters one’s perspective of urbanism.

This lecture will offer a quick primer on the global subculture known as urban exploration or “urbex,” a synthesis of adventure, tourism, anthropology, and modern archeology.  It will discuss the characteristics that make urban exploration in Korea a distinctive experience by sharing stories and pictures from common exploration sites like hanoks and other styles of early modern architecture.

When Ryan Berkebile is not taking photos of abandoned neighborhoods, he likes to write up his explorations for his website, Long Distance Runner.
